XII. Kane's Struggle
In the sunlit observatory on Butler Island, McGary and Morton, huddled over their instruments, heard the encroaching footsteps of the Esquimaux. The sharp crack of the gunshot still echoed in their ears. McGary glanced at Morton, a hint of admiration in his eyes. "That shot achieved two goals," McGary mused, picking up the fallen Eider. "meal for us and a message to our visitors."
Morton smirked. "It sure prompted a swift retreat. And, fortunately, an Eider is now our gain."
